working for a sustainable future

Getting involved in Transition Lavenham.

Allotments

Lavenham Parish does not have any public allotments. A handful of privately owned plots and our garden share scheme almost meet present demand.  The privately owned site, behind Ropers Court, is a potential building plot in the medium term.  It follows, that we should seek a longer term solution, including ancillaries such as storage and toilets.  Please contact Roy Whitworth on 01787 248178.

Orchards

In 1921 there were at least 24 orchards in Lavenham parish, of which 19 were in the village itself. Today, only one of these ancient orchards survive.  Transition Lavenham wants to encourage local fruit and nut production: we need your help to identify where 4 or 5 trees minimum might grow. Don't know anything about orchards? There's a Suffolk Wildlife Trust course "Creating an Orchard", on 13th November. T-L will pay your fee.  Please contact John Knight on 01787 247728.

Seed Scheme

Last season we distributed packs of starter vegetable seeds to members.  This initiative seemed to go down well with both established gardeners and others. Feed back on the quality of the seeds was also positive.
These seeds were bought from Terwin Seeds of Cockfield Green.  They would offer a seed purchase discount scheme, part of which we could enjoy to cover our costs and part passed onto members.  The scheme could be used to introduce new members.  Most gardeners select and buy their seeds during the autumn/winter months. Please contact Carroll Reeve on 01787 247674.

Awareness/publicity/admin

After our initial launch meeting we have held a series of events.  Most of these were poorly attended.  We need to find out why and address our shortcomings.  This may be a mixture of the nature and timing of the event and how it was publicised, or not.  Allied to this is the need to get our admin. up to speed. Please contact Roy Whitworth on 01787 248178.

Localised waste management

Presently, domestic and commercial waste and sewage is transported for processing to land fill and centralised sewage treatment.  The County is considering a centralised plant. We are looking at ways to save these transport costs and potentially provide a source of locally generated electricity.  As a first step an inventory is required of commercial waste.  John Busby on 01284 830138.

In each case we need a small team to take on these issues on and help to take this Transition initiative further.  Informality is, no doubt, key. To get involved contact any member of the steering team.
